Human Towers

This weeks Foreign Friday tradition is predominately done in Spain.

When all of the spaniards have large festivals (which is all of the time) they try to make it very memorable by making a monument out of humans. read about the exact tradition here

That is right, Spaniards make a tower out of themselves?!?! They stack humans higher and higher on top of each other all to see how high they can go.

When I first saw this I thought chinese. Who else would do something like this? The chinese acrobats may have gotten this unique tradition from their spaniard friends.

that would suck to be at the bottom

This picture reminds me alot of the cheer leaders pyramids except it is way cooler.

I wonder if Spain has really good cheer leaders?

All of these bandanad people seem to be bonding both physically and emotionally. There is no such thing as a personal bubble anymore. You can see the team work though. The look of accomplishment on their faces.

Have you ever attempted doing a pyramid or something like this before?

Birthday Traditions

For this Foreign Friday: I wanted to tell you about two interesting traditions that Brazil and Canada have for people on their birthdays.

In Brazil, when  someone has a birthday they pull on their earlobes according to how old they are. So if it was my birthday today and I was 17 some one  would gladly yank on my precious little earlobe 17 times.

I guess this is the equivalent of birthday spankings in America. It is funny though because everyone always jokes about doing this but no one has enough guts to do actually spank someone. (they must be scared they will be charged with assault)

New Discover-Butter Stick

In Canada they put butter on the birthday boy or girl’s nose. This is based on the belief that on that day or for that year bad luck will merely slip off the tip of their nose because of the greasy butter.

This sounds fun but could create some nasty zits for the future ;)

Do you have any fun birthday traditions?

Foreign Fridays

These begins yet another new tradition! I am just full of traditions this week.

In a nutshell every Friday I am going to be talking about foreign coutnries outside of the US. One week I could talk about interesting traditions of a country while the next I could be talking about something current in that country.

This week I would like to focus on Japan.

This country is currently dealing with an extreme devastation. People who had all of these materials required for a stable life now have nothing. This disaster is something that can not be easily over looked.

It is already hard to hear about one person who has lost everything, but thousands of people is unimaginable. People who experience this sort of trauma don’t always come out in the best of shape.

We need to pray for these people to pull together as a nation. We can come along side them to provide anything that is of dire need and choose to love. In times of strife and utter chaos, a nation has the opportunity to become one. People forget about their 3 o’clock dentist appointment and learn to love.

It is level grounds. I can only hope that this natural disaster puts people on level grounds. The disaster invites people to sacrifice as a community and help each other out rather than look what needs to be done only for themselves.

Have you been praying for the healing of Japan?
